Delhi's Air Quality Crisis: What's Behind the Smog and How to Stay Safe

Delhi continues to battle some of the world's worst air pollution. Here's a look at what drives the city's hazardous AQI levels, how it affects health, and practical steps residents can take to protect themselves.

Every winter, Delhi's Air Quality Index climbs into the 'severe' and 'hazardous' categories, turning the skyline into a grey haze and prompting health advisories across the city. While the smog tends to dominate headlines between October and January, the underlying pollution sources persist throughout the year, making Delhi one of the most air-polluted capitals in the world.

Several factors combine to push Delhi's AQI to dangerous levels. Vehicle emissions from millions of cars, trucks, and two-wheelers remain a constant contributor. Construction dust from the city's rapid infrastructure growth adds fine particulate matter to the air, while emissions from small-scale industries and diesel generators compound the problem. Every autumn, large-scale crop residue burning in neighboring Punjab and Haryana sends plumes of smoke drifting into the National Capital Region, sharply worsening pollution levels for weeks at a time.

Delhi's geography makes matters worse. The city sits in a landlocked basin, and during winter, cooler temperatures cause a phenomenon known as temperature inversion, trapping pollutants close to the ground instead of letting them disperse. Calm winds during this season further prevent pollutants from clearing out. In contrast, monsoon rains and stronger summer winds tend to wash and blow pollutants away, offering residents a temporary reprieve.

Prolonged exposure to Delhi's polluted air carries serious health consequences. Fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream, increasing the risk of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Long-term exposure has also been linked to cardiovascular disease and reduced lung function. Children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions face the greatest risk, and doctors in the city routinely report a spike in pollution-related illnesses during peak smog season.

Staying safe amid high pollution requires a few practical habits. Checking the daily AQI reading before heading outdoors helps residents plan activities around safer hours. On days when the AQI enters the 'poor' or 'severe' range, wearing a well-fitted N95 or N99 mask outdoors and limiting strenuous outdoor exercise can reduce exposure. Indoors, keeping windows closed during peak pollution hours and running a HEPA air purifier can noticeably improve air quality. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet also support the body's resilience against pollution-related stress.

Authorities have introduced measures such as the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which tightens restrictions on construction, vehicle use, and industrial activity as pollution worsens, along with periodic odd-even vehicle rationing schemes. However, experts widely agree that lasting improvement will require sustained, coordinated action across Delhi and its neighboring states, particularly around crop burning and vehicular emissions. Until then, staying informed about daily AQI levels remains one of the most effective tools residents have to protect their health.
