Is AQI 1000 Harmful?

AQI 1000 is far beyond the severe range. Here is what it means, who is at risk, and the steps to take immediately.

Yes. AQI 1000 is extremely harmful. It is not just unhealthy air; it is a pollution emergency where even healthy adults should avoid outdoor exposure and vulnerable people need extra protection.

What AQI 1000 Means

On India's CPCB AQI scale, 401 to 500 is already classified as Severe. An AQI of 1000 is beyond the top of that public scale, which usually means pollutant levels are extraordinarily high or the reading is being shown on a different scale or sensor system.

At this level, the air can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs within a short time. People with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and outdoor workers face much higher risk.

Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

Possible symptoms include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, burning eyes, headache, dizziness, unusual fatigue, and worsening asthma or heart symptoms. Seek medical help urgently if breathing becomes difficult, chest pain appears, lips or fingers look bluish, or symptoms do not improve indoors.

What To Do Immediately

Stay indoors, close doors and windows, and avoid outdoor exercise. Use a well-fitted N95 or equivalent mask if you must go outside. Run an air purifier if available, set HVAC or car ventilation to recirculate, and keep children, elders, and people with respiratory conditions away from outdoor air.

Avoid adding indoor pollution: do not burn candles, incense, mosquito coils, or solid fuels, and postpone frying or high-smoke cooking. If your room still smells smoky or feels irritating, move to a cleaner indoor location when possible.

Should Schools, Offices, Or Events Continue?

AQI 1000 is a strong signal to cancel outdoor sports, construction-heavy outdoor work, open-air events, and long commutes where possible. Schools and offices should prioritize remote or indoor arrangements, especially for children and high-risk groups.

Check The Reading Before You Decide

If you see AQI 1000, verify the source, location, timestamp, and AQI scale. Some apps use US AQI, some use India AQI, and low-cost sensors can spike during smoke or dust events. Even so, a verified reading anywhere near this level should be treated as hazardous.

Bottom Line

AQI 1000 is dangerous air. Reduce exposure first, verify the reading second, and watch symptoms closely. The safest plan is to stay indoors in the cleanest available room until levels drop sharply.
